The Jere Fluno Academic Achievement Scholarship

The Jere Fluno Academic Achievement Scholarship will be awarded each semester, starting in Fall 2006, to a member of the Wisconsin Beta Chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, who over a long period of time, demonstrated superior academic achievement and who has been an active participant in chapter, community, and campus activities. The amount of the scholarship will be $1,000, which is to be provided by Mr. Jere Fluno ’63 through donations to the Sigma Phi Epsilon Education Foundation.

ELIGIBILITY

Any active member of Wisconsin Beta Chapter who has Senior standing with the University of Wisconsin (32 or less credits needed to graduate), who has a 3.25 or better cumulative GPA, and who has not been awarded this scholarship in the past.

SELECTION PROCESS

An application for the scholarship is available at the bottom of this page. The application must be completed by midnight on the first day of classes each semester.

A selection committee will be formed as follows. Two members will be selected from the undergraduate chapter by vote of the chapter. In the event that these members cannot perform their duties, replacements will be appointed by the chapter president. Two members from the AVC Alumni Board will be the current chapter councilor and the board president. In the event that these members cannot perform their duties, replacements will be appointed by the board president.

The selection committee will meet within the first two weeks following the start of classes for each semester to decide the winner.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The selection criteria and weight assigned to each factor are as follows.

1. Academic Achievement - 25%
This category is designed to reward those who have a higher GPA
than the required entry level of 3.25.

2. Chapter Involvement - 25%
This could include chapter offices, athletics, support of the house,
and general support and attendance of chapter activities.

3. Community/Campus Activity - 25%
Activities that support one’s community could include work with
charities, political activities, and volunteering time to help out
where needed. Campus activities could include holding a student
government office, serving on campus committees, or being
involved in campus projects.

4. Essay - 25%
This essay should be not more than 500 words on the subject:
What are you most proud of accomplishing as an undergraduate in
Sigma Phi Epsilon, and what are you going to be most proud of
accomplishing as a lifelong brother? The essay should be completed
at the same time as the application.

Each candidate will have a 15 minute interview with the selection committee so that members of the committee will have the opportunity to explore areas that may be unclear and to see how the candidate conducts himself.

PRESENTATION

Presentation of the scholarship will be at each semester’s Balanced Man Scholarship Banquet, held about three weeks after the start of classes. The scholarship money will be paid to the recipient by the Sigma Phi Epsilon Education Foundation.

Academic Acheivements and Essay

Academic achievement in excess of the 3.25 minimum plus performance in each of the following categories will each receive 25% weighting in the decision of the committee.

Chapter Involvement:
Examples would be chapter offices held, athletics, support of the house, and general support of and attendance at chapter activities.

Community/Campus Involvement:
